How can I play mpegs on Linux?

Posted by Vivek Gite [Last updated: May 22, 2007]

Q. I have few MPEGS files (downloaded from internet) and I’d like to play them on my Debian Linux system? How can I play mpegs on Linux?

A. To run mpegs on Linux you need players such as xine, mplayer, and others. You can download the same from internet and install them. Many distro installs them by default. Following steps explains installations.

Debian or Ubuntu Linux Xine installation

Type the following command at shell prompt:
$ sudo aptitude install xine-ui libxine-extracodecs

Debian or Ubuntu Linux Mplayer installation

Type the following command:
$ sudo aptitude install xine-ui libxine-extracodecs
$ sudo aptitude install mozilla-mplayer

However I recommend you to use automatix, if you are new to Linux.
