ssh command

I need to tunnel X Window securely over SSH bases session so that I run X program on my remote Linux/Unix server/workstation and get back display to my Apple Macbook pro laptop. I tried the ssh -X user@server1 and ssh -Y user@server2 commands on both OS X Mountain Lion and Apple OS X Mavericks/Yosemite. But, I am unable to use the ssh command with X11.

How do I fix this problem on OS X and enable X11 forwarding with ssh command? How do I install XQuartz (X11.app) server on Apple OS X Mountain Lion or Mavericks or Yosemite?

What the double -- (dash) does here? Why it is used in this shell command and why not just use the following?

SSH: Use Remote Bash / KSH source Command Set Variable Locally From a Remote Server

I have setup a master / local server combination using OpenSSH. My local server depends upon master server for a remote sourcing. The remote sourcing should set a large number of variables locally in a bash shell script. The code is:

user@slave $ source ssh user@master "/service/dyn.master.setenv.sh --mode=slave"
echo "$var"

The var is not setting and I am getting various errors. How can I do a remote "source" of a bash script file (from master.example.com) and set a shell variable locally at slave.example.com?
