Install Multimedia Codecs For Ubuntu Linux

Q. How do I install Multimedia Codecs for Ubuntu Linux? Can you suggest Multimedia Player for Ubuntu Linux?

A. The best way to install Multimedia Codecs under Ubuntu Linux is use Automatix2 software. Please see previous FAQ Howto: Install Mplayer under Ubuntu Linux

Quick installation: Automatix2

Open terminal and type the following command:
$ wget http://www.getautomatix.com/apt/dists/feisty/main/binary-i386/automatix2_1.1-4.12-7.04feisty_i386.deb
$ sudo dpkg -i automatix2_1.1-4.12-7.04feisty_i386.deb

Now Automatix2 can be run from terminal by typing the command:
$ automatix2

Now install all required multimedia codecs and software.

Multimedia player for Ubuntu Linux

  • Beep Media Player - Plays mp3 and other format
  • Rhythmbox - An integrated music management application
  • VLC Media Player

You can install above players and codecs using Automatix2 and Package manager which is located at System > Administrator > Synaptic Package Manager

Hey I also want to know how to update new multimedia codec? is there any other codecs are compatible or we need specific?

I am sorry to you and everyone that Automatrix is no longer there, as their site has been permanently shut down by the Feds.
