Aptana IDE is supposed to be as good as dreamweaver.

Aptana is a robust, free & open source (source available soon - licensed under the Eclipse Public License v1.0), JavaScript-focused IDE for building dynamic web applications for Linux, Windows and Mac systems. According to official Aptana site, it has following features:

  • Code Assist on JavaScript, HTML, and CSS languages, including your own JavaScript functions
  • Outliner that gives a snapshot view of your JavaScript, HTML, and CSS code structure
  • Error and warning notification for your code
  • Support for Aptana UI customization and extensions
  • Cross-platform support

One small rectification: Aptana is *not* open-source. The license does not allow redistributing it, or redistrubuting “any derivative work of the Program”, which means that no other open-source project can take advantage of it. See the license file ( http://www.aptana.com/legal/apl/ ):
“THIS LICENSE GRANTS PERMISSIONS ONLY FOR YOUR INTERNAL USE (AS DEFINED BELOW). IF YOU WISH TO DISTRIBUTE OR MAKE OTHER USES OF THE PROGRAM, PLEASE CONTACT APTANA.”

It’s a little disappointing, especially since they blurry it by calling it “source open” (note the subtlety…).
