2. do i really need the extra packages in the DVD iso, or i should go for the CD iso?
3. and will i have a complete working system with & only the CD iso?
4. what's the default desktop environment and can i install another one of my choice eg KDE 4.3.2?

Hey

Debian is awesome!
Lenny looks and sounds amazing!

1 question : Does DVD1 (base install) have more packages than CD1?

Thanks!

Recommend away. I don't for care the complete lack of support from Ubuntu types.

I installed wubi. I could only connect to the internet via PPPOE one time; no subsequent attempt worked. I posted my problem in the Ubuntu forum and got no reply whatsoever after one week. I then logged in to the Ubuntu IRC channel and asked for help with my problem. There were tons of people on the channel. No one offered to help with my problem. Other people who asked for help after me got a response. That left a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

That's why I uninstalled wubi. If I have a problem with Windows, I can get some help somewhere. Ubuntu is *WAY* too unsupported. It's a community of snobs from my experience.

I had no trouble connecting to the internet using Knoppix, but would like to try Linux from a permanent installation. Hence, since the Knoppix docs recommend Debian, I'd like to try Debian.

What about installing Debian from the first DVD rather than the first CD? Would I get something usable? I really want to be able to get HELP from *included* documentation. One of my gripes with the Knoppix DVD is that the Help files aren't included.

What about symantic instead of apt-get? It's 2009; command windows are from the 1960s! That's why I only want to play with Linux--the first thing I get told is open a terminal window and type a shell command. You can't do everything in Windows via its GUI, but you sure can do an awful lot more than you can do in Linux.

You can install Ubuntu (600M) or Debian (600M) from the first CD. Download only first CD and install minimum system. Once done use apt-get package manger to install required packages. I strongly recommend Ubuntu.

I'd like to try Debian, but 5 DVDs? 18+GBs? I've been trying to get into Linux as a total newbie, but it's been mostly bad to very bad experiences. My least worst experiences have been with Knoppix and they recommend Debian for those who want a permanent, bootable installation on their HD. I've got 11 GB unallocated space on my HD right now and suspect that a lot of those 18+GB on those 5 DVD images are things I'd never use even if I could live forever.

I also tried wubi (Ubuntu inside Windows) and found that I liked Gnome better than KDE, but wubi and Ubuntu have wretched support, so I uninstalled wubi. The Windows community is hugely more helpful than the Ubuntu crowd.

Anyway, is there some Debian installation I can get that will fit into my current 11GB unallocated space and that has just the essentials plus GOOD HELP DOCUMENTATION and Gnome?

TIA to those who reply.

Looks like Debian has taken down the ISO links for I386 architecture. Can't find any explanation, just get a 404 error. Was really looking forward to giving Debian another try but if I can't get it, I'll stick with Ubuntu. If anyone else knows why the i386 and 64bit iso's are not there? Is it available by torrent only? That would s*ck.

* For almost all PCs select 32 bit version. For e.g., most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors.
    * Choose 64 bit version to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2).

wich one should i use for my iMac G3 Power PC?

hi,
am a new user of Debian. Ive downloaded Lenny only the first DVD. Ive installed it on VMware n it works. it can be accessed from outside (SSH) and also has an internet connection. I want to put up a FTP server but am not able to install it from the internet? could it be because during installation i have not chosen the network update option?
