Download of the day: VLC media player

Posted by Vivek Gite [Last updated: December 19, 2006]

The VLC media player is an open source and my favorite media player is out with a new version.

It is a highly portable multimedia player, encoder and streamer that supports many audio and video codecs and file formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs and various streaming protocols. It is able to stream over networks and to transcode multimedia files and save them into various different formats.

It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

Supported oses:
=> Linux
=> Microsoft Windows
=> Mac OS X
=> BeOS
=> *BSD
=> Windows CE
=> Sun Solaris

Highly recommend even if you are using Windows XP.

    Hi,
    i am having difficulty in using the vlc player. my linux distribution redhat el5, and the vlc version that i used is vlc-0.8.6c-1el5.rf.i386.rpm. i used rpmforge-release-0.3.6.1-el5.rf.i386.rpm and yum to install the vlc. everything seems going fine during the installation. however when i try to play back some mpg or avi, it complained saying
    ** (.:4353): CRITICAL **: clearlooks_style_draw_focus: assertion `height >= -1′ failed
    [00000306] access_file access error: file /home/redhat/Desktop/1.avi is empty, aborting
    [00000313] access_file access error: file /home/redhat/Desktop/1.avi is empty, aborting
    [00000301] main input error: no suitable access module for `/home/redhat/Desktop/1.avi’
    [00000292] main playlist: nothing to play

    can anyone provide suggestion on solving this? something wrong with my installation or my vlc player configuration? sorry i am a linux newbie. Thanks in advance. :)

    regards
    Michelle
