Before installing from LiveUSB I switched off ACPI and all other options. So Ubuntu was installed successfully, but Software Center doesn't start....
The reason of user/pass request while booting from CD is either CD defect or hardware trouble(may be CD/DVD drive, cable or smth like that). IMHO
P.S. the latest sentence by a specialist was to replace the motherboard.....

I discovered finally what caused the problem…..There’s some trouble with hardware on my machine….I left attempts to boot from CD… Before installing from LiveUSB I switched off ACPI and all other options. Today - I'm trying to boot up to try to save files on my friend's Windows XP system and it asks me for the Username and password. So it's the same Live CD on two systems works differently. So far I looked for a solution on several web sites and couldn't find anything. User "ubuntu" with blank password doesn't work. Couldn't developers be so kind to reply at any web site where this question was posted and let us all know what is a default user/pwd to log into this thing?

This is very strange. Downloaded and burned the ISO disc, it checked as ok, no problems. Then I ran it from the CD first, seemed to work just fine, except it can't find the wireless card for a connection, so then I installed it as the only OS on a single hard drive system, a blank drive with nothing on it when I started, and it appeared to install just fine, but on reboot it claims it can't find the hard drive, no such device it claims, and dumps me in a never ending loop with a Grub 2.X screen. Tried all of those options presented and it still won't work. I'm not sold on this as a better operating system if it can't even find the one and only hard drive it installed itself on.

After many months of people telling me this is the only way to go I decided to give it a try. I'm having the same problem with 9.10 dual w/Win XP file sys and boot manager. I haven't tried no name login with no password ( enter enter) but that's next. Bootup does show ubuntu 9.10 vs Kubuntu which I had running in 9.04. Going to try enter enter next.
I'lll try to get back here to let u all know what happened.

I downloaded the torrent, burnt the CD, reformatted the partitions and installed it. I was suspicious that something was wrong when the GRUB listed older kernels. When I looked under System,Administration, About Ubuntu - it confirmed that I had re-installed version 9.04, not 9.10. When I attempted to download and apply the updates my system hung and I had to do a hard reboot. Now my new install is just flaky - can't find internet, error messages, etc.

BEWARE – This torrent is really version 9.04 – NOT 9.10. You can always check the CD with the "Check cd for defects"-utility on the cd.. I did that, got one single error, burned the cd again, checked, no errors, installed without a problem. :)

Another suggestion try burning CD at lower speed and verify after burning CD.
