I m able 2 run setup from usb. but after chossing the drive and clicking install button it says ‘No root file system is defined please correct it from partition menu’.

Additionally – perhaps redundant as well – you need to take care of the bios menu and hit “boot from USB”. And if your USB stick is already enabled to boot then that must work just fine..

Perhaps that is a redundant question, but before trying to boot from USB have you enabled it so it can boot from the USB? For you first need a certain program to enable the stick..

I tried both from cd and a transcend 4 GB pendrive. I hav 3 partitions on my hard drive(C, D and E). I also tried directly install from USB and CD but it didn’t recognise the partition and for partition it gives two options 1) Erase whole drive and install ubuntu and 2) Manually create partition for ubuntu.

Hi,
I installed ubuntu 10.10 desktop -i386 inside windows vista in another drive. I m able to see to see two options windows vista and ubuntu on restarting computer but when i clicks ubuntu, ubuntu screen comes and then a small screen comes saying ‘verifing the installation’ and a screen comes saying ‘no root system is defined’. Can u help about this.

No. I got the error too. There is only one password window, not two as there would be with a new password.

The password I used to start my account within Vista doesn’t work, though it assumed and inserted the same user name as I use in Windows.

I try a new user name & password but of course that doesn’t work. As I said, there is only one blank to enter the password. But I wanted to try it anyway.

Stumped before even installing.

Does it matter that I used a memory stick with Wubi and the ISO?

I’m using the 32 bit i386 iso to install onto a Toshiba A665 Satellite.

(Looking at Linux under Vista, to help self-learn vi & C. Tried Cygwin that came with “C Programming for the Absolute Beginner” (Michael Vine) but it doesn’t seem to know even basic vi commands).

The blog link in top para appears broken, returns 404 error.

@ Lahi – Yes you can install ubuntu while running Windows Vista from the same hard drive. And no – you don’t need to format your hard drive to do so.

@ Al kashmir – It is simply asking to you to select a password for ubuntu. I got the same error while installing Ubuntu on Wndows Vista. I simply went on to select a password and it worked likea charm!!! Hope this helps.
