I use both OS X and Linux, mostly Red Hat Enterprise, Debian and Ubuntu, but I do not pirate.

If I don’t have enough to pay for something, I scrimp and save until I have enough. I just recently made a purchase of an Apple program that I’ve wanted for about three years. It was worth the wait.

If someone has taken the time to code and make a little cash, be they Apple or an independent individual, why not pay them?

If someone contributes code to the world via a GPL or BSD license then I, as a not so wealthy person, sincerely appreciate their contribution to open source.

I’ve paid for USB Overdrive for a few different machines in the past. But even then, it made me angry that I had to do it in the first place. Why, oh why, should I have to spend $20 to configure my mouse properly? Mac OS X only lets you configure your mouse if you have an Apple Mighty Mouse, and the Mac drivers from Logitech and Microsoft are extremely bloated and buggy. Yet on Linux, I can plug in any mouse I like and configure it for free.

Oh really? What about students? They cannot afford all the stuff out there. Just go to TPB and you will find tons of people downloading all sort of software. You cannot stop people; opensource or closesource – it doesn’t matter. My rule is simple. I will download pirated game or software. If I use that game or software program for 30 or more days, I will buy it (if price is <=75 bucks).

And don’t even get me started on DRM and useless copy protection schema…

Can you give me one example where open source not allowed people do what they want to do… sure piracy is bad and everyone has a hidden agenda; like this blog tries to promote open source software using this example.

Let me tell you one thing, if people cannot afford something they will pirate it; an open source software doesn’t matter.
