After long debate, GPL v3 is here. Richard Stallman's Free Software Foundation launched GPL Version 3 on Friday, 29, 2007 with an eye toward restricting patent actions against free software
One of the early adopters of GPL 3 will be the Samba Server project. Samba is extremely useful for sharing files and printers between UNIX computers and Microsoft Windows computer.
Over the last decade the GPL revolutionized the way software is written and distributed. GPL v3 is supposed to take revolution next level. However Linux is not going to be released under GPL v3.
What's new in GPL 3
Following are few new things in GPL v3.
Say no to DRM
This new version block DRM (digital rights management) shit in all GPL licensed code. For example TiVo set-top box cannot use GPL 3 licensed code.
Say no to Patents
GPL 3 also blocks nasty deals such as Microsoft/Novell agreement.
Sure it will take some time to adopt new license.
