Debian Linux (Squeeze) Install Firefox 4

My Debian Linux 6 (64 bit) has Epiphany installed which is the GNOME web browser. Epiphany aims to be simple to use and standards compliant but I want all other Firefox extensions. How do I install the latest version of Firefox 4 under Debian Linux version 6?

Debian Linux Project rebranded the Mozilla Firefox program as Iceweasel for Mozilla Firefox. It is almost same program. It can be installed easily using the apt-get or aptitude command line option. This program works with all Firefox add-ons such as ABP, Noscripts, and many other popular add-ons as Iceweasel is a fork of Firefox.

How Do I Install Iceweasel 4 Under Debian 6?

You need to add the following entry in /etc/apt/sources.list, enter:
# echo 'deb squeeze-backports iceweasel-4.0' >> /etc/apt/sources.list
To type the following command:
# apt-get install -t squeeze-backports iceweasel
To start it, enter:
$ /usr/bin/firefox
$ /usr/bin/iceweasel
You can visit Application > Internet > Iceweasel Web Browser to start the same from Gnome menu.

    Nice article. Actually stumbled across the Debian Mozilla team’s webpage a week or two ago. Further to what is mentioned in this tutorial you may also want to add the GnuPG to your keyring as well. Also if you’re adventurous you can also update to Iceweasel 5.0, 6.0, Aurora or Beta versions as well. Full instructions here:

    does not work for me :(
    apt-get says that the package has no installation candidate.

    System: Debian squeeze/sid (Ubuntu)

    Maybe this is because of Ubuntu

    This still doesn’t explain how to install firefox on Debian 6. How do I get the icon to pop up on the desktop with out having to go through the program file or making a generic link to the firefox script?
