To see current disk or partition signatures or magic strings use the wipefs command. The syntax is:
$ sudo wipefs deviceNameHere

Examples

Type the following command to see info about /dev/vda1″
$ sudo wipefs /dev/vda1
Sample outputs:

offset               type
----------------------------------------------------------------
0x438                ext2   [filesystem]
                     UUID:  3ba2f0d5-936b-4f34-b0fd-e2cda9bd2669

$ sudo wipefs /dev/vda
Sample outputs:

offset               type
----------------------------------------------------------------
0x1fe                dos   [partition table]

OR
$ sudo wipefs /dev/md2
Sample outputs:

offset               type
----------------------------------------------------------------
0x438                ext4   [filesystem]
                     UUID:  41f6cd69-7b07-45a5-bed5-34226bf2ce9c
