Ubuntu Linux: Install MPlayer Multimedia Software To Play Movies and Music Files

How do I install Mplayer multimedia player on Ubuntu Linux operating systems using command line options?

The MPlayer supports a wide variety of multimedia file formats. It can also save all streamed content to a file. It is available in both command line and GUI front end format. You need to install the following packages:

  1. mplayer – movie player for Unix-like systems.
  2. mplayer-gui – GUI frontend to mplayer.
  3. mplayer2 – next generation movie player for Unix-like systems.
WARNING! Only install mplayer or mplayer2. Do not install both at a time. I recommend that you install mplayer and mplayer-gui option for ease of use

Install mplayer cli and gui

Open a terminal and type the following command:
$ sudo apt-get install mplayer mplayer-gui

A note about installing mplayer version 2

To install mplayer2, enter:
$ sudo apt-get install mplayer2

A note about installing mplayer using GUI option

Open a Ubuntu Software Center (press Super and select Ubuntu Software Center), and type the following term in the search bar:

Click on the “Movie player for the Unix-like systems” > Click the “Install” button. You need to authenticate yourself to install the software when promoted:

You need to repeat the above steps to install Mplayer Media Player.

How do I use Mplayer software?

Use the command line option as follows:

mplayer file.mp3
mplayer tv-show.mp4
mplayer movie.avi
mplayer home-video.mov

Alternatively, you can use GUI option > Press Windows (Super) key > Type mplayer in unity search bar and select the MPlayer Media Player:

Mplayer Multimedia Player will be luached as follows on screen > Select the Mplayer window > Right Click > and Select Open or CD/DVD to open media files:

    i wish to install jdk on my ubuntu but this was what happened:

    jhang@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre sun-java6-jdk

    How can i install in backtrack?….
    I already install vlc but it not working…. vlc plyer not start…..
