The following command is used to update and download package information and security update information. All Other commands operate on this data. The syntax:
$ sudo apt update
Sample outputs:

Hit:2 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-security InRelease
Hit:3 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates InRelease

The command informed me that 59 security and other package updates available. To apply them, run:
