New Theme

last updated in Categories News

I’m launching a new version of nixCraft. A couple of functionality changes you’ll notice:

  • Clean design and less clutter
  • Faster loading – content coloum get loaded first
  • No ads between content
  • No more captcha
  • You can now have avatars via prominent Gravatars service.

I’m planning to add following two features:

  • PDF download for large articles
  • Magazine style home page

The fine header and other design was executed by Divya Manian and design based upon thesis theme framework.

Finally, I hope you like new changes. Please add your suggestions and feedback in the comments below.

Nice nice change. Some day you could add a post with some tips and tricks to make your site look that proffesional.

  4. Vivek,

The site looks great with the Thesis theme. I like the happy penguins on the top. The individual articles themselves look clean and great.

You don’t have the option for email subscription on the home page. It may be good to put it along with the “RSS Subscribe” on the top below the penguins.

  6. Just came across your site and I have to say NICE job modding the thesis theme man – really outstanding job. I use the theme on my personal blog where I keep thing very simple but this is a very attractive implementation I must say.

  7. Oh yes, forgot to say that I have some layout stuff that is broken in Firefox? at first I though it was made that way, but when i browse the rest of the site i see it should not be like that. If you want I can take screenshots and send them to you ( you will have to mail me and let me know you want them, you also dont have to make this comment visable we can pretend I didnt say this… )

  8. Hey, very good work, and nice theme, I like the penguins on the top.

Just one question, what CMS are you using for your site?

  9. @Ramesh, I will try to add it somewhere.

@Sweta, Heh, will fix it later on, but no ETA 😉

@ Protocol, I’m confused with your comment. Is this related to my site (this theme)? Please clarify further.

@all, thanks for feedback. I really appreciate it.

  10. Hi Vivek,

I thought I’d add my approval of the sites new look. I appreciate the faster loading pages, and the great content you produce. Please keep it up!

  11. nice theme
I like your site because I learn many thing from your site and understand many thing about Linux and BSD
but I think new theme is very heavy and for use when use Dial up connection it is so heavy, if I have high speed internet it is good. and it is not good for dial up internet.

  12. Vivek: Can you add the reCaptcha plugin? Not only does it help eliminate a whole lot of spam, it also is good for society by helping to translate old books.

Thanks for this blog, I love reading it.

  13. @ Jacki,
You can subscribe via email by clicking on ‘Notify me of followup comments via e-mail’ option. Otherwise use social networking tool such as or

A reCaptcha will be displayed only if a comment gets blocked by one of the filter rules or if it gets flagged as spam by the Akismet plugin. This gives people a “second chance” to prove that they are indeed human and not a spam generating bot. Once they successfully complete the captcha, their comment will be posted normally. Try to posting a comment with a banned word (hint: pr0n words) or 3 or more URLs.

Note that comments that don’t pass the captcha will be immediately discarded.

    Thanks for all feedback.

  14. @Vivek: Whoa that is cool. May I ask how you only get it to show the reCaptcha page if wp thinks it is spam? What plugin does that or did you code something custom?
